Research Projects
Dissertation (2017-) : it involves two parts
- The first part is producing a new critical text and translation of the Syriac History of John the Son of Zebedee, a Syriac apocryphal narrative. Two manuscripts at the Bibliothèque nationale de France have been collated with other manuscripts and an English translation will be given.
- The second part involves establishing an historical context for the narrative. The argument is that it is from the late fourth-century C.E. in Edessa and is responding to confrontations among various religious groups to promote the interests of Nicene Christians in the city.
Other Projects (2017-)
- Preparation of the first English translation and analysis of the Acts of Aitilaha, a fourth-century Syriac martyrdom narrative from the city of Arbela (modern Erbil). This text is related to another martyrdom, the Acts of Sharbel, and the purpose is also to examine their complex textual relationship.
- Preparation of an article based on my Master’s thesis on the literary-critical practice of paraphrasing. I develop a comprehensive theory for the practice based on ancient progymnasmata, then I apply the theory to New Testament texts that contain a literary relationship, such as Ephesians and Colossians, Jude and 2 Peter, and the Synoptic Gospels.
